EMERGENCE

• Things can happen in groups that you can’t predict just by looking at the group members
• Things can happen within a system, say a community, or a locality which add up to more than the sum of their parts.
• This can happen through simply addition of effects, or through knock on effects.
• Social relationships work at a group level which can override what an individual thinks they are doing and groups can act according to criteria (values) that are favoured by none of the members (Group think).
• And groups can bring together resources in a way far beyond the reach of individuals
